Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster
Description

Izonil Waterproof and Breathable plaster provides a totally waterproof barrier, sealing and preventing the ingress of water either side of the plaster while remaining vapour and air-permeable.  It does not contain harmful or flammable ingredients and is environmentally friendly.

Characteristics

This high quality, cement/lime based, fibre reinforced, mortar meets the requirements of BS EN 998-1 and is suitable for rendering and plastering masonry, for renovating and waterproofing old, listed and heritage buildings, cellars and basements. It provides a solution to problems caused by driven rain or rising damp and is guaranteed for 10 years.

Applications include restoration and new render or repair work where it can be used to protect against damage caused by flooding. It is especially suitable for use in bathrooms, showers, wet-rooms and swimming pools or for rendering external walls, facades and plinths.

Izonil plaster is manufactured to strictly controlled specifications and is supplied as a ready mixed powder that requires only the addition of water on site.

Applications
Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster is designed for renovating and waterproofing old, listed and heritage buildings, cellars and basements. It provides a long lasting solution (guaranteed for 10 years) to problems caused by rising damp and moisture in conventional masonry, cob walls and wood laths.

Applications include restoration and new render or repair work where it can be used to protect against damage caused by flooding. It is especially suitable for use in bathrooms, showers, wet-rooms and swimming pools or for rendering external walls, facades and plinths.

Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster is a fine grade mortar and so offers a ‘one coat’ solution providing undercoat and professional finish coat.
Using Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster
Before applying Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster it is important to always remove all existing render, plaster, loose particles, residual paint, dust and other impurities. Defective wall elements, such as damaged bricks, should be repaired or replaced. If used as a repair mortar the old render or plaster should be removed 800-1000 mm above the boundary of water incursion. If salt efflorescence is present, jointing must be raked to a depth of 20 mm. The wall surface should be thoroughly cleaned with suitable equipment such as high pressure air or water. Water absorbent surfaces should be well moistened with water before application.

To maximize cohesion a thin mixture of cement and water should be spattered on to the surface before plastering.

Once correctly mixed Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster can be applied direct on damp, wet masonry. In this case it is very important to make sure that if there is water leakage onto the surface of the wall it should be stopped for at least 72 hours or more, if possible, to ensure the plaster sets. If wood or metal laths are used on the wall they need to be secured properly to prevent sagging of lathwork after the render is applied.
Mixing
Add 4 to 5 litres of water to each bag of Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster. Mix for at least for 3 to 5 minutes until the mixture becomes smooth and is the consistency of butter. Mixing can be performed by hand or by machine. If material is not to be used immediately mixing should be stopped.

Do not add anything else to the mix.

Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster has a working time of approximately 1 to 3 hours, depending on ambient conditions.
Applying Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster
Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster can be applied by trowel or mortar gun. Depending on the conditions of the surface, it may be applied in no more than three layers, each approximately 10 mm thick. Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster is ideal as a scratch and brown base coat. The final 2 to 3 mm of the application can be skimmed. lzonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster must be cured for approximately eight hours between layers. If the first layer is fully set, it should be moistened before a second coating is applied as it works best wet-on-wet to optimize cohesion.

If used for tanking (e.g. in basements) and applied in different phases, lap joints must be covered completely within the layers to at least 150 mm thickness.
However, if only one layer is to be applied, its thickness must be 15 mm and if used for tanking it should be applied in one run. Layer thickness should be checked regularly. Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster is not suitable for use on flooring. For flooring solutions please contact Izonil Limited.
Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster is a fine-grained plaster that can be applied as a finish coat. Surface textures as well as finish can be achieved using standard stucco tools, while the plaster is still workable. Hardened plaster should not be remixed or reused!
Curing and post application treatment
It is important to prevent Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster from drying too quickly. This can be achieved by applying a fog water spray. Sufficient moisture is required to permit continuous hydration of the cementitious materials and to minimize cracking. The effectiveness of the technique used will depend upon the local climate and working conditions. Walls exposed to direct sunlight and wind should be fog sprayed for seven days after plastering. During this process care must be taken to avoid erosion damage to plaster surface.

Plastered interior walls require adequate ventilation to cure.

The final layer of plaster may be painted with air-permeable whitewash; or silicate paint ONLY where rising damp is a problem. Tiles may also be applied to the final layer.

Important

When plastering extremely wet masonry with Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster there is a possibility of surface water aggregation. This is natural and will disappear as the plaster sets – although it may be necessary to remove any accumulated water from the floor!
Cleaning
Use water to remove Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster from tools and equipment. Hardened material can only be removed mechanically.
Packaging
Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster is supplied in 25 kg paper bags.
Coverage
Approximately 18 kg of dry mortar will cover 1 m2 at 15 mm thick, excluding allowances for loss wastage, surface profile and porosity. One 25 kg bag will cover up to 1.4 m2 with a 15 mm thick layer.
Shelf-life
Izonil Waterproof and Breathable Plaster will remain usable for up to 18 months if stored in its original packaging on wooden pallets or shelving in dry conditions.
